Winding Down Maui

Well I'm taking a break from packing, reservation checking, and tying up loose ends before our flight back to Honolulu in the morning. So I think this is a good time to journal a bit of what happened yesterday and today.

Tuesday started early by taking Betsey and Ron to the Maui airport to fly to Honolulu at 5:30am to attempt to get new passports.

Since we were up early and the airport was on the way we drove up to Haleawkela to watch the sun rise.  We were about 20 minutes late but it was still beautiful and cold. Brrrrr 44 degrees.

We didn't stay long because it was so cold, but because we had all day, or at least until 3:30 we decided to go look for the beach known as Jaws due to the large waves.  Beijing that it was breakfast time we stopped in Piai and ate at Charlie's . Remember we walked through there on our adventures on Sunday.  The breakfast was yummy!!!

We walked around town for a while stopping in little shops and I found the cute tiny magnets, a package of four. The mermaid for Deb, the whale for Betsey and either the fish or hibiscus for Gina. I will keep the fourth as a reminder of the women who made this trip so memorable.

Darn I wish I had taken a picture of the mermaid and whale before I gave them away!

So after wandering around Piai and spending a few dollars we headed up the Road to Hana in search of the giant waves at a location called Jaws.  Turns out the gate to the dirt road was locked and we were not willing to leave the car unattended while hiking into the spot.  Guess when they have big waves and competitions, they open the gates and those with four wheel drive can go through all the others leave their vehicles and hike in. So we continued up to the windy, narrow, step and slippery road to Hanna.

Well it takes a long time to drive the road to Hana and as it happened we needed to be back to pick-up Ron and Betsey, we were running low on gas and remembered that when you get to Hana you just turn around go back the way you came.  So we did.  With about an hour or so before pick-up time and 15 minutes from the airport we stopped by the gorilla and had a hot dog at the food truck that brags about having the best hotdog on Maui.

Ron and Betsey's news was good so we drove back to the condo and had a picnic dinner by the pool.

Wednesday was beach day. We rented chairs, grabbed the goggles, towels and sunscreen and headed to the beach at Weleia just down the road a piece from where we were staying.  At 5pm we met Bob and Deb at the Monkey Pod for dinner and then wandered the upscale mall where we found our turtle clock to add to our indoor sea wall back home.

So on our final morning in Maui we took time to go to a highly recommended spot The Kehei Caffe where the line out the door and down the street is the norm.  Well the line was short and we had a couple of hours to burn so we found that the line out the door was also coiled around on the inside too. The wait was worth it and so we can check off another must visit spot.  After checking out the Koy   Pond we headed to the post office to mail home some more treasures. And then headed to the airport.

Take off from Maui
Goodbye Maui
Hello Honolulu.

After we got the new passports we spent most of the day getting checked into the Navy Lodge and having dinner with Justin and Gina, Marty, Jade and Justin Jr.  Our last day in
Hawaii was spent at Bellows Beach.

Hope to get back here again, it's a great beach!
